TOO HOT!

A lot of Arizona’s population are originally from out of state, and when summer comes around you might begin thinking “my house is TOO HOT, my AC must not be working!”

While sometimes that is the case, there are some things that you can do to help keep your cool air inside and survive the 115 degree days, while also keeping your energy costs down.

1. Reduce Going Inside and Outside Frequently

If you frequently open your doors to the outside, whether that be because you are moving furniture, having guests over, jumping in the pool, taking out your dog, etc, you may realize that your air conditioner is running nonstop. Air conditioners use the air from inside your home and cool it roughly 20 degrees at a time. By constantly allowing more hot air into the home, your air conditioner might need to work a little more on the days you are very active between inside and outside. Some solutions to help with energy conservation include:

  • Raise the temperature on your thermostat if you are not going to be inside as much as you are outside
  • Try to reduce the amount of times you are going outside and inside
  • Keep your doors closed as much as possible.

2. Ceiling Fans & Blinds

Ceiling fans are a great way to improve airflow to get a nice breeze in your home. Did you know that ceiling fans can help make it feel about 4 degrees cooler in your home?! That is an incredible difference. This trick can potentially help you save money on your electric bill this summer.

Additionally, using blackout curtains with thermal protection or plantation shutters are common ways to combat the heat in your home by reducing the sunlight that enters the house. Certain blinds can act as an insulation barrier or reflect the sun, which in turn, can help cool your home.

3. Insulation & Sealing

If you have a new system but feel like your home is still struggling in these extreme temperatures, you may want to check your insulation quality and weather proofing materials around your doors, windows, and other areas sealed from the outside. It may also be important to have your HVAC technician check the sealing in the attic between your ductwork to ensure that the air is flowing into your vents rather than leaking into your attic space.
